This portrait is of my Aunt Dee Dee, my father's only sister and the oldest of seven children. When I began painting this portrait from an old hand colored photograph, the studio filled with the fragrance of lilac water, which she wore every day. Her name was Gurnie Belle, but from the time I could talk I called her "Dee Dee". No one ever knew why. She passed away at age seventy-eight in 1969. Her favorite color was, of course, red.
